The Old House
The sun shone brightly overhead against the canopy of an azure sky. The chirping of birds was drowned out by the occasional roar of a car engine 200 meters away; as the cars sped pass on the main road. I pressed the remote control to open the gate to the apartment complex and walked unto the road. The road forked in three directions. Each took me to a direct route. Nonetheless they all carried me to the same destination. I would normally walk on the road to my right. Today I made a conscious decision to walk on the middle road.
A few minutes after briskly walking that road I passed an old abandoned house. It stood on a 2 feet high cut-stone foundation. The craftsmanship for the cut stones was rudimentary. Cracked and crooked ornamental lattice work lined the edge of the roof. Large parts of the zinc roof were missing. There were no front door and windows. Even the door frame was gone. A small step gave access to the front door. It was cracked in many places. The yard was overgrown. Knee high grass and shrubs surrounded the house.
The house was a sour thumb in the neighbourhood. The neigbourhood watch organized occasional cutting of the yard one or twice each year. Each time I passed the premises, I felt the presence of evil. Today was no different.
“What do you think happened?” Came the voice of the Lord to me.
“Lord, I have no idea. Why do I feel uneasy in my spirit whenever I pass here?”
“What you feel is not fear. You are discerning what happened. This house was cursed. The family was cursed. No one has lived here for decades. Do you notice the style of the house? Isn’t this the architecture of Jamaican houses from in the 60s?”
“Yes Lord the lattice work, chalk walls and stone work had me wondering about its age.”
“You must be very careful about the family you marry into. Not allowing Me to advise you can result in you coming under the curse of someone’s bloodline.”
Then begun my lesson about generational curses.
Jewish families maintain lists of their fore-parents to ensure they do not marry into the wrong family. Each generation is catalogued to maintain the purity of the bloodline. Families that came under a curse were avoided to ensure it was not passed to successive generations. Numbers 14 verse 18 AMP, tells us that “The Lord is slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving wickedness and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting (avenging) the wickedness and guilt of the fathers on the children, to the third and fourth generations [that is, calling the children to account for the sins of their fathers].” (See Exodus 34:7 also).
Centuries later, Yahweh changed his vow and told them that He would let each person bear their own guilt, “In those days people will no longer say, ‘The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge” (Jeremiah 31:2). This was also declared by Ezekiel 18:2-3:
“What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The fathers eat sour grapes [they sin], But the children’s teeth are set on edge’? As I live,” says the Lord God, “you are certainly not going to use this proverb [as an excuse] in Israel anymore.
Maintaining the records of the family heritage also allowed the Israelites to maintain records of the families that were blessed. Everyone desired to marry into these families. It was understood that the blessing would be on the family for up to a thousand generation. The only contingency was for them to remain obedient to the commands of God (Exodus 20:6). If we examine the heritage of Jesus, in Matthew 1 and Luke 3:23 – 37, we will see that He came from a lineage of righteous people. Persons like Rahab, the former Gideon harlot, and Bathsheba were forgiven of their transgression and married into a bloodline that came from Adam, Abraham and David. These giants of the faith had a personal relationship with the Almighty God. The relationship and their faithfulness caused their offspring to be blessed.
Marriage to other nations was forbidden because they worshipped other gods. God warned the children of Israel that associating with them would cause then to fall into the same practise. The consequence for worshiping other gods caused the family to come under a curse (Deuteronomy 5:9; Deuteronomy 7:19). Marrying into the family placed them under a curse. We see it in the family of Ahab with his marriage to Jezebel. Ahab became an idol worshiping because of his marriage to Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal King of Sidon (1 Kings 16:29-34). The heritage of idol worship and wickedness was passed down to their children (Jehoram, Athaliah and Ahaziah). His grandchildren and other descendants, also adopted the same practices resulting in his bloodline perishing (1 King 22:51-53; 2 kings 8:25-27; 2 Kings 9:22-37; 2 Kings 10:1-11; 2 Kings 11:1-3, 15-16).
Getting the Right Fit
Salvation broke the power of darkness over our lives. We are free from all the works of the Devil. We can be freed from generational curses by:
- Giving our lives to Jesus Christ. The blood of Jesus cleanses us from unrighteousness and sets us free from all curses;
- Renouncing all association with the devil;
- Declaring the blood of Jesus Christ over your household.
- Making Jesus Christ Lord of our household;
When we make Jesus Lord of our lives and that of our household we receive His protection and will be blessed by Him.
The thief comes only but to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). Demons do not leave willingly unless they are aware of our authority. Regular confessions of the promises of Jesus Christ to the children of the Kingdom of God, is essential for us to remain free and walk in our freedom.
Our upcoming book Sudden Death: Loosening Foundations will offer greater insight about generational curses.
